Artist: JOHNNY YUNGUT TJUPURRULA

Cat#: PGPT002

Size: 122 X 122CM

Medium: Painting

This painting was created by Johnny at Kintore in 2003 under the auspices of Papunya Tula Artists. Ref: Cat No: JY 0302032.
The subject of the painting is the ancient secret/sacred subject matter of the Dreamtime characters known as the Tingari Men who visited the swampy area known as Tjuntulpul situated in the sandhill country east of the Kiwirrkura Community in Western Australia. Because of the spiritual nature of the painting further information is restricted to the initiated male members of the Pintupi comminities that cover vast areas west of Haasts Bluff and Papunya. The subject forms part of the teachings of post-initiatory youths and edifying contemporary customs.
Johnny was born circa 1930 at Tjangimanta, north-east of Kiwirrkura Community. He is one of the acknowledgted most significant artists painting for Papunya Tula Artists, the Aboriginal owned Art Centre accredited as the inspiration for the emergence and international success of the contremporary Aboriginal Art movement — through the extraordinary contribiutions of Geoffrey Bardon in the early 1970s.
